Tuesday, 11 January 2022 – The Old Operating Theatre Museum and the Herb Garret

The Old Operating Theatre Museum and the Herb Garret, on the site of the original St Thomas Hospital, are devoted to medical and surgical history. Following the Apothecary Act of 1815, the operating theatre was created in 1822 and it is now the oldest extant example in Europe.

Under the terms of the Act, apprentice apothecaries dispensing herbs to surgeons were required to observe surgery taking place. Previously most surgery took place at the patient’s bedside. The garret of the church of St Thomas’s was used to store and cure the herbs.

Our morning visit will include a private guided tour of this unique and fascinating museum.
